The visit began by meeting a number of apprentices and employees from infrastructure contractors John Sisk & Son Ltd, who are hard at work laying the crucial foundations for the future of this landmark city centre site and was followed by a site tour, giving an in-depth overview of what is one of the UK’s largest regeneration schemes.

The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, Homes England’s Director of Regeneration Partnerships (York) Leon Guyett, McLaren Regeneration‘s Managing Director, Tom Gilman and Cllr Claire Douglas, the Leader of City of York Council, accompanied the Prime Minister on the walk around of this 45 hectare site, where he was able to find out more about our plans to create a brand-new city quarter for the communities of York.

During the Prime Minister’s visit he reinforced his support of York Central, in particular the 2,500 brand new homes we’ll be delivering on-site, saying: “Here, social and affordable housing is crucial and this site alone is going to generate 20% social and affordable housing and we’re having a discussion about whether we can get that percentage up.”

“York Central is going to fundamentally change how the rest of the world sees York, over 2,500 new homes and one million square feet of high-quality office space, creating new homes, jobs and opportunities for our county’s residents today and in the future. It’s going to put York on the map as another Northern economic superpower.” - David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire

The visit also heralded the announcement of an additional £3m cash boost for the transformation of the National Railway Museum’s Central Hall, which will sit at the cultural heart of York Central and you can read more about this fantastic news here.

The day represented another example of the significance of York Central in supporting the region to achieve it’s growth ambitions, as well as demonstrating how the York Central partnership is working closely to make the project a success.

Key representatives from the development team, City of York Council, Homes England, John Sisk & Son Ltd, Network Rail, National Railway Museum and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority all helped make it a memorable morning all round.
